User behaviors and security monitoring

Background and aims of the study

This study is conducted in 2024–2025 by scientists from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). The study aims to determine how the computer behaviours of users and administrators affect the work of those monitoring or analysing security events in computer networks. More specifically, the aim of the study is to increase knowledge of how behaviours and actions give rise to events that require analysis effort from humans. The insights gained in this study will, among other things, make it possible to produce better test cases for detection systems and enable more realistic cyber security exercises. Ultimately, the aim of the study is to improve the cyber defences of organisations in the European Union. The study is part of a larger project on AI-supported intrusion detection and response. This project is called AInception and is funded by the European Defence Fund (GA 101103385 - AInception).

Answering this survey

It will probably take you about 30 minutes to respond to this survey. Many questions will ask for quantifications or assessments that may be difficult to provide exact answers for, or depend on specifics not detailed in the questions. In those cases, please remember that your estimate or guess will be more useful than a blank answer. Your answers are valuable to us and we hope that you take part in this survey!
